What's Behind that Name ...

Del Mexico Mine

Located northwest of Wright Mountain at N36° 20.448; W120° 33.023 at 3626 feet. This cinnabar mine is also known locally at The Mexican Mine. The mine was shown on a 1915 map. Cinnabar was discovered here by a sheepherder who worked for Antonio Urruttia. Antonio filed the original claim in the 1860 as the Mexican Mine. However, the claim later proved to be on Lillis Ranch property. Lillis took over the mine. The mine was abandoned by 1903, but was taken over by the Pacific Quicksilver Company in 1911 until it closed again in 1914. The New Mercy Mining and Milling Company bought the claim and opened the mine again in 1917 and closed the following year. Several other companies tried to produce ore but the mine finally closed in 1936. The mine was prospected by several different people in the 1940s and 50s.

The mine is located on the south side of the gorge. There cabin and mill site was below the mine on the north side of the gorge and they ran the ore across the gorge on a cable tramway.

This is currently private property.
