Florence Mack MineNamed on the San Benito Mountain (1969) 7.5' quadrangle at N36° 18.784; W120° 40.866 at 2968 feet. This cinnabar mine is named for the wife of the miner who opened it sometime before 1862. First activity was reported on the mine in 1904 by C.P. and Florence Mac Smith. The mine is for the wife, Florence Mac, of the miner who opened it. The mine closed in 1939. This mine supported several hardworking Mexican families who operated the mine during the depression. A dirt road ran from the Coalinga road past the Florence Mack Mine to Small's Camp, up Sawmill Creek trail then over to the New Idria Mine. Between 1904 and 1906 oil was delivered by teamsters from the Coalinga oil fields to an oil storage tank located at the Coalinga road junction. Workers from New Idria picked up the oil and delivered it the New Idria Mine by driving it over the previously mentioned road.
