What's Behind that Name ...

Panoche

15 miles east-northeast of San Benito. The place is in Panoche Valley. Named on Panoche quadrangle. Postal authorities established Panoche post office in 1870 and discontinued it in 1915. The name is a corruption of panocha, which is a Mexican-Spanish word for a confection of brown sugar. Panoche or panocha was the name of a sweet substance that the Indians extracted from reeds and wild fruit.
