What's Behind that Name ...

Ruis Saloon

From the Hollister Free Lance, August 19, 1887

Shooting Scrape -- Word was brought to Hollister last Sunday night that Joe Sanchez, a teamster in the employ of the New Idria Mining Company, had been shot and mortally wounded by Antone Ruis, a saloon-keeper, at the latter's place, 3 miles east of New Idria. Deputy-Sheriff Frank Ross, accompanied by the District Attorney and Coroner, started at once for the scene of the shooting. Dr. Camplin and B.B. McCroskey returned Wednesday night and from them we learn that the first report was very much exaggerated. It seems that Sanchez and Ruis were shaking dice for money at Ruis' place, that a quarrel arose between them and that Ruis seized a shot gun and emptied it into Sanchez' left side, just below the short ribs. The gun was loaded with fine shot and the wound, although very painful, is pronounced by both Drs. Camplin and McPherson as not necessarily fatal. Ruis is still at large, and Frank Ross, Jr., is in hot pursuit. We are authorized to state that there was no danger of lynching at any time and that Ruis will have a fair trial when taken. Sanchez has not been in the employ of the company since last January and was taking the place of the regular teamster, during the absence of the latter on business.
