What's Behind that Name ...

San Benito Mill

Named on San Benito Mountain 7.5' quadrangle, the San Benito Mill is located at the confluence of San Benito River and Saw Mill Creek at N36° 20.580; W120° 39.851 at 3847 feet. This chromite mill was built by Jack James in 1953.

There was once a little community of about 30 families, a school house and blacksmith located near this site known as Small's Camp. People living at Small's Camp worked at local mines and ran the open pit sawmill.
