What's Behind that Name ...

Santa Margarita Mine

Named on the San Benito Mountain 7.5' quadrangle at N36° 19.065; W120° 41.893 at 3524 feet. This is an cinnabar mine was discovered in 1938 by Joe Tirado who named it the New Tirado Mine. It later became the Edna Bell Mine. The mine was worked sporadically until 1944. It was reactivated in 1954 Juan Carrillo as the Santa Margarita Mine. (Holmes; Carrillo). Juan operated the mine until he sold the lease in the late 1960s. His cabin and retort were located near the road on the San Benito River.
